The mental health of the staff and medical students is very important. It must be looked after. Relaxation using virtual reality to the rescue!

Wellbeing is high on the agenda both locally and nationally.

The NUH undergraduate medical education department is passionate on the subject. Improving the wellbeing of the staff, students and patients.

Mental Health

Mental health issues are often unspoken amongst peers, friends and family. As a result they go un-noticed.

In a busy hospital environment students are faced with many professional challenges. These can amplify feelings of stress. The pressures include the need to demonstrate high academic and clinical performance. There are many pressures to cope with.

Personal wellbeing can often be neglected by the students. This can have adverse consequences both personally and professionally. It can also affect their interactions with our patients.

Patient Safety

Patient safety is so very important.

Students can very often fixate on a patients physical symptoms and may overlook the wellbeing aspect. As a result, providing students with with a greater understanding of wellbeing and metal health is vital. Such knowledge and self-awareness is crucial to the overall patient outcome and wellbeing.

Safe Space

The Friends of QMC are pleased to have been able to support the creation of a safe space.

Providing a recliner chair, foot stool, paintings, mood lighting and headphones. These items provide a comfortable environment whilst they use the virtual reality mediation hub. Even high tech needs comfortable surroundings!

The room, located in the QMC, contains a Virtual Reality system. This cutting edge system allows the user to fully immerse themselves in a first-person experience.

Thanks

We would like to thank the League of Friends for providing the funding needed for our Meditation and Wellbeing project. We now have a well-established a VR Meditation/ Well-being room within our Medical Education Centre. The VR and wellbeing room has proven instrumental in supporting the medical students with their mental health, it is actively used providing a private space for our students to unwind and re-energise, away from the academic and clinical challenges and pressures. The students have provided positive feedback and it is with thanks to the league of Friends that we have been able to make it a success!
